Kim Mahler, PhD (CUSP Postdoc ‘20), co-founder & CEO of Voltela, has dedicated his career to enhancing how we connect in an increasingly digital world. Originally from Germany, Mahler earned both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Technical University of Berlin. He further augmented his expertise with an M.A. in Leadership in Digital Communication from the Berlin University of Arts.

From 2010 to 2019, Mahler was integral to the Wireless Communications and Networks department at the Fraunhofer Institute, focusing on 5G car-to-car communications.

After starting his journey at NYU as a Smart Cities Postdoctoral researcher in 2019, Mahler delved into the intricacies of urban connectivity. This role catalyzed his entrepreneurial journey, leading to the founding of Voltela in 2020 — a company dedicated to ensuring reliable connectivity for commercial drones.

Voltela positions itself as a bridge between mobile networks and the burgeoning drone industry. By offering aviation-grade connectivity, Voltela ensures that drones operate safely and efficiently, even beyond the visual line of sight. The startup emphasizes the transformative potential of drones, particularly in critical sectors like medical supply delivery, where timely access can be life-saving.

Under Mahler's leadership, Voltela has garnered significant recognition, notably as a finalist in round seven of the GENIUS NY accelerator in 2023. The startup was one of five teams selected from more than 450 submissions to participate in the prestigious business accelerator's final round, and took home $500,000 at the Pitch Finals ceremony.

Mahler's journey — from academic research to pioneering drone connectivity — highlights a commitment to leveraging technology for societal benefit. Through Voltela, he continues to drive innovations that redefine how we perceive and utilize autonomous aerial systems.
