NYU Startup Guide
This reference guide is designed for NYU and NYU Langone innovators — including faculty, students, and staff — who are interested in launching a startup based on their innovations. It focuses specifically on ventures formed to commercialize one or more related innovations made at NYU and protected via intellectual property rights (e.g., patent or copyright or know-how) owned by NYU.
Turning research discoveries into commercial products amplifies the social and economic impact of NYU’s research. For many, forming a startup is the best way to bring these ideas to market. Over the years, NYU innovators have helped launch more than 200 companies, delivering breakthrough products like therapeutic agents, devices, industrial materials, and software applications. While not every startup succeeds, NYU’s track record is impressive, with successful ventures including Anaderm, Nybo, Repare, Smart Therapeutics, Sugen, Touchco, Clarifai, Canaery, Medivis, and many more.
This guide is a complement to NYU and NYU Langone Health’s intellectual property policies, which supersede any interpretations provided in this guide.
