Introducing Tech Venture Teamup: Connecting NYU Researchers with MBA/Masters Talent

The NYU Entrepreneurial Institute is excited to launch Tech Venture Teamup (TVT), a new pilot program designed to accelerate the commercialization journey for NYU researcher teams by pairing them with experienced NYU Stern MBA and other Masters students with a background in healthcare/life sciences and business.

A Powerful Partnership Model

TVT builds on a successful model of NYU researcher-MBA collaborations that helped launch ventures like Oraliva, Heliotrope, and Vital Audio. The program aims to strengthen research teams' capacity in key business areas by matching them with MBA & Masters students who bring complementary expertise, while offering students hands-on experience with developing commercial pathways for early-stage healthcare and life science startups.

Program Structure

Phase 1 - Apply | Oct 15-Nov 10: 8-10 research teams/projects, and 16-20 Masters students will be selected for the pilot.

Phase 2 - Kickoff | Nov 18: Kickoff event will feature pitches from research teams, introductions from MBAs and structured networking over food & drinks. Researchers & students will be matched after based on mutual interest.

Phase 3 - Incubation | Nov 18-Feb 25: Three months of collaborative business model development, with: access to $1,000 in reimbursable expenses (for customer discovery), venture coaching, office hours with investors, healthcare entrepreneurs, and final pitch prep.

Phase 4 - Healthcare Innovation Pitch Fest | Feb 25: Final presentations to a panel of healthcare investor judges, and an audience of mentors and peers. Two winning teams will receive an additional $2,500 in reimbursable expenses for customer development.

Why Participate?

For Researchers: Ideal candidates are research faculty, PhDs and postdocs working on a healthcare/life science innovation, who have participated in the Tech Venture Workshop and are open to potentially co-founding a company based on their research with a Stern MBA/EMBA student. Benefits to participation include:

  • Build momentum toward other funding opportunities like NSF I-Corps, NYU's Tech Venture Accelerator, and SBIR/STTR grants

For MBA/Masters Students Benefits: Ideal candidates have a background and/or significant coursework in business & healthcare or life sciences and can help ventures navigate commercialization challenges. Benefits to participation include:

  • Gain hands-on experience with early-stage healthcare startups and bringing an emerging healthcare/life science technology to market
  • Develop valuable skills in regulated markets and healthcare business models
  • Potential to co-found a healthcare startup based on cutting-edge NYU research

Note: IP Considerations

Intellectual property ownership remains with the University and Principal Investigators until teams choose to form a legal company together. At that point, the technology would be licensed from NYU to the company with equity granted accordingly.
