Take a look back at two of this semester’s illuminating workshops tailored for current and aspiring entrepreneurs at NYU.

The Art of Dropping Out workshop, featured Avante Price and Eli Taylor-Lemire, co-founders of POSH, a live event ticketing startup backed by over $20 million in venture capital. During the session, the Price and Taylor-Lemire shared insights on how they launched their company, which aims to democratize access to live social experiences, during their time as students at NYU. They encouraged students considering dropping out to work on their venture while still in school instead and to take full advantage of the resources available to them, including access to a broad network of  potential co-founders and mentors willing to assist eager student entrepreneurs.

Another workshop, Legal Blueprint: Top 10 Issues for Startups Seeking Venture Capital, was led by Kristen Nicol (Law ‘17) and David Rand (Law ‘17), Associates at Fenwick & West. The pair walked us through the key legal fundamentals needed to prepare for raising venture capital, stressing the importance of structuring the legal aspects of your company correctly from the start. Their guidance covered securing intellectual property rights, properly documenting equity, and establishing solid terms of service and compliance with privacy policies. Nicol and Rand underscored that tackling these foundational issues early can save founders time and trouble down the road.

Together, these workshops offered a practical look at both the strategic and legal considerations involved in launching a startup especially while still in school. Whether they are fine-tuning a business idea or laying the groundwork for securing funding, attendees left each workshop equipped with actionable advice to help their ventures succeed long-term.
