About Startup School

NYU’s Startup School exists because founders rarely need the same thing twice. One week, you might be defining your target customer. The next, you’re trying to understand a term sheet or figure out how to price your product. Startup School meets you where you are, with focused sessions built around the real problems founders face at every stage.

Each workshop runs independently, so there’s no long-term commitment or application process. Registration is required for each workshop, but you choose the sessions that match what you’re working on right now. Attend one workshop or follow the full series throughout the semester.

What You’ll Learn at Startup School

Startup School covers the practical, sometimes overlooked parts of building a company. Past topics have included:

  • Customer discovery and validating a business idea before you build
  • Pricing strategy and early revenue models
  • Fundraising basics, from angel investors to venture capital
  • Legal fundamentals every founder should know before incorporating
  • Marketing and growth tactics for early-stage startups
  • Financial planning and accounting for first-time founders

Each session is taught by an industry expert who works in that field every day. You’ll learn directly from venture capitalists, startup founders, startup lawyers, digital marketers, accountants, and other professionals with current experience.

Who Should Attend

Startup School is open to current members of the NYU community, and there’s no single “right” background required. Past participants have included:

  • Students with an idea they haven’t acted on yet
  • Founders already running an active startup who need help with a specific skill
  • Faculty and researchers exploring the commercial side of their work
  • Staff interested in entrepreneurship who want to learn the fundamentals

There are no prerequisites or applications. Registration is handled separately for each workshop, so you’re free to attend one relevant session or work through the full series over the semester.
