Entrepreneur’s Dorm-cubator – Applications Open!

Entrepreneur’s Dorm-cubator Applications Open for 2013-2014

NYU plans to accelerate and foster the entrepreneurship experience outside of the classroom and into the streets of NYC – 2nd Street to be exact. The Entrepreneur Dormcubator will be the newest addition to NYU’s variety of themed dormitory floors for undergraduate upperclass students this incoming academic year.

Students across the curricular spectrum will come together to live and share ideas, resources, and innovative approaches to problem solving. Furthermore, the mentorship and programming activities, to be led by an NYU faculty affiliate, will encourage students to develop and pursue entrepreneurial ventures in areas related to their academic pursuits. The growing demand from the community of student-entrepreneurs to create a space to collaborate and turn their bursts of genius into something tangible has led to this initiative.

By Demand – The Need for the Dorm-cubator
Students will have access to resources to help them identify practical applications to current issues, problems, and needs. Sponsored activities will include events such as a speaker series with alumni entrepreneurs and other members of our entrepreneurship community, training workshops focused on relevant skills, and field trips to connect with the broader startup community in NYC.

While outcomes could lead to designs for products or services with commercial potential, the primary emphasis of this community is to share knowledge to create value in the lives of others. Through formal teaching, informal learning, creative activities, and personal support from NYU faculty affiliate, undergraduate housing experience is about to be redesigned.

Other universities such as Columbia and Stanford have launched similiar dorm themes in 2011-2012. However there have been challenges in reaching the right students and creating a diverse mix across disciplines. Perhaps the timing is just right for NYU this time around.

2nd Street Residence Hall – More than just ping pong games…
The 2nd Street Residence Hall houses about 300 students and 8 Resident Assistants in the vibrant East Village community – close to the LES, Soho, Chinatown, and Little Italy. A diverse community of residents ranging from sophomores to seniors, domestic and international students, enjoy the option of studio singles, doubles and duplex triples not to mention the large TV/entertainment lounge with a pool table, ping pong table.
