Lean Launchpad for Applied Tech Commercialization

A certificate program for PhD students/candidates, postdocs, and faculty . The program is a lab, not a “book” class - to give you real experience in how to turn an idea or invention into a business.

You'll get your hands dirty talking to users, customers, partners, and competitors, as you encounter the chaos and uncertainty of how a startup actually works. Each day will be a new adventure outside the classroom as you test each part of your business model and then share your knowledge with the rest of the class. Attend an info session and apply by 12/9!

    When and where?
The program runs for six weeks from Jan 12th - Feb 16th, 2017.
Class will meet on Thursdays from 2:30-6pm in the Leslie eLab.

    Who's it for?
All current NYU PhD students/candidates, postdoctoral fellows and faculty are welcome to apply.

    What should I expect?
To dedicate at least one full day per week (3.5 hours in the classroom, and 4-8 hours outside of the classroom doing customer discovery and preparing for the next in class session) over six immersive weeks.

You will spend at least 3-4 hours each week conducting primary customer research/interviews, guided by best practices in technology commercialization taught by the leaders of the NYU Entrepreneurial Institute, with support from leading entrepreneurs and venture investors in NYC.

Do I need to come to the class with an idea or invention to pursue?
During the class, you will work in teams of 2-4 to launch a startup based on an idea or invention. If you come to the class with teammates and an idea/invention in mind, that's great...but don't worry if not. We'll help you pair up and think through your startup idea on the first day of class.

    How much does it cost?
If you complete the course, it's free! You will be charged $60 when you register for the class, which will be refunded to you if you finish the course. If you drop out part way through you will not be reimbursed the $60.

    How do I signup?

You must apply to be in the program. The application is not long or difficult - we promise! In reviewing your applications we're primarily assessing whether you understand the requirements and objectives of the course. Want to increase your changes of getting in? Attend an info session - details below! Apply by 12/9.

What books and materials does the course use?

The majority of your learning will come from getting out and talking to customers. That said, there are some great videos and texts we'll use in the class to help guide you through the process.

This sounds awesome! Where can I learn more?
